Ice is the recommended treatment for acute injuries. It is especially helpful to reduce swelling and control pain. Ice is most effective when it is applied early and often for the first 48 hours. Heat, on the other hand, increases circulation and raises skin temperature. .

Sometimes the key is to look for bruising either immediately or within the first few days. If there is bruising this could indicate tendon involvement. This is because there is a better blood supply to tendons vs ligaments.

In LOWER BACK PAIN
Lower back pain can originate from many different sources. The clue is very often the type of pain being experienced. A shooting pain often radiating down the leg often means that the nerve is being pinched, on the other hand if it is a dull aching type of pain it would most often mean that the joint is possibly involved. Pain which is localised and can become worse when pressed on. The source of the pain will, for obvious reasons, change the treatment plan and focus completely.
